Verbal Abuse
In creating this piece, there was a lot I wanted to express. "Verbal Abuse" is meant to bring awareness to weight shaming of all kinds and to draw attention to how the things people say can affect an individual. I wanted to get people thinking, why is it sociably acceptable to call someone skinny, but it isn't sociably acceptable to call someone fat? It's important to me that this conversation starts because, in my experience, calling an individual skinny can be just as traumatic as calling someone fat. The creation of this piece sparked from a singular comment that started to eat away at my self-confidence, "Put some meat on your bones.” As someone who struggles with weight gain and mental illness, this took a huge toll on me. Instead of continuing to let their comments get to me, I decided to release my emotions into my art in order to create something that now makes me laugh. Creating art has always been a huge part of how I take care of my mental health and cope with the many things that are hard to handle in this life.
